Your air conditioning system is the only way that you can get through a hot summer. It is so relaxing to have the ability to escape the heat and enjoy a relaxing cool day. In order to do this the air conditioning system has to be up and working properly, and it seems that the summer is the time when the air conditioning system malfunctions in some way or another. There are a few things that you can do as the homeowner to keep the air conditioning system up and running at full force through the entire summer.

Hire an HVAC Contractor

If the small problems are taken care of before they turn into large problems, you are likely to keep your air conditioning system up and running. It can often be hard to know exactly what is wrong before something is broken so it is important to have a professional perform some preventative maintenance. The contractor will have the skills necessary for catching the small problems and fixing them. Having the small things dealt with going into a summer increases your chances of getting through the summer without a problem. You should have the preventative maintenance completed each spring before summer.

Clean the Compressor

Often overlooked since it is located outside, the air compressor is a very important part of the air conditioning system. Often the problem with this part of the system is that it is overgrown with vegetation. The first thing that you want to do with the compressor is cut back all the vegetation and then open it up. Once it is open be sure that you vacuum out any debris. You then want to turn all fins so there is no obstruction in airflow. Perhaps the most important thing that you can do for your air compressor is to level it. The reason that it needs to be level is to allow the coolant to flow freely in the coils.

Inspect the Ducts

If the air ducts are blocked they can cause stress and strain to occur on the air conditioning unit. it is very easy for the air ducts to start developing problems if they are not properly maintained. At least a few times a year you should take your vacuum to the air ducts to clean out all the dust and other debris. However, you should have services like Scott's Heating & Air Conditioning Services clean your air ducts at least every three years. This will help you keep your air conditioning malfunctions to a minimum.
